Islandsmidill – The Icelandic Media Corporation (IMC) - through its registered trademark VAL+ is proud to announce that new broadcasting services have been on air in Iceland since October 2004, using the sophisticated technology deployed by HYPERCABLE International (France) worldwide.
Launched on 29 th October 2004, the relay in Reykjavik broadcasts 11 digital TV channels (including CNN, CNBC, Cartoon Network, TCM, Discovery, National Geographic, Animal planet, Eurosport, RUV, Skjar 1, PoppTV) and reaches the capital itself as well as areas from Akranes up to Hvolsvollur in the “Greater Reykjavik”. (see the map).

On 10 th March 2005, it was the turn of Akureyri in the Northern part of the country to deploy a broadcasting system with approximately the same capacity.
Islandsmidill has chosen the standard developed by HYPERCABLE International under the name of “Hypercable”, which is in accordance with the ETSI DVB-MC/S norm. The advantages of using the DVB-MC/S standard are large and include the ability to reach 6 Gigabits per broadcasting cell and to make considerable energy savings (very low energy consumption).
Expectations are high at the moment to deploy other relays in remote parts of the country and some communities have already confirmed their will to be part of the project. Islandsmidill, in association with VAL+, is currently building the project together with HYPERCABLE International, the world leader for terrestrial broadcasting, so as to design the more suitable system in view of the difficult geographical conditions in some parts of the country.
For any information, either if you are interested in receiving digital TV channels at home, or if you would like to join VAL+ as financial partner for future deployments, please contact Icelandic Media Corporation’s CEO: Mr. Tomasson, Njordur, Tel. +354-515-9700, email : njordur@fjarski.is; homepage: www.valplus.is.
