Slovenia is a small country in Central Europe and a new member of European Community. Although small, with population just under 2 million, the country is well served with telecommunication services: there are 48 fixed and 90 mobile connections per 100 inhabitants. Cable television is available to 50% of all households and the take up (where cable is available) is around 80%.
Ljubljanski kabel is the second largest cable operator in the country serving the area of Ljubljana (the capital) and some major towns in south east of the country. Besides analogue television service Ljubljanski kabel is also providing digital packages to its subscribers to add variety to its basic offer.
In December 2004 the testing of HYPERCABLE International transmitting equipment DTT Standard DVB-MC/S was successfully passed and in January Ljubljanski kabel presented the new service to the public.
The service is available in the central part of the country to more than 20% of Slovenian population. Additional coverage will be added later in 2005. The service consists of three digital packages: basic, extended and premium.
Its goal is to offer access to multichannel programming in the areas where the buildup of cable network was prohibitively expensive and never materialized. Ljubljanski kabel is thus using the sophisticated technology provided by HYPERCABLE International to extend the reach of cable television beyond the frontiers of physical wires.
